Homemade Saltwater Taffy
Ingredients:
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A few drops of food coloring
Directions:
1. Combine sugar and cornstarch in a large saucepan, mixing well.
2. Add corn syrup, water, butter, and salt to the saucepan. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
3. Attach a candy thermometer to the saucepan and cook without stirring until the mixture reaches 250°F (hard-ball stage).
4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and food coloring.
5. Pour the hot mixture onto a greased marble slab or baking sheet.
6. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then butter your hands and begin pulling the taffy by stretching and folding it repeatedly until it becomes light in color and firm.
7. Stretch the taffy into a long rope and cut into bite-sized pieces using buttered scissors.
8. Wrap each piece individually in wax paper and twist the ends to seal.
