KFC-Style Gravy
Ingredients:
4 tbsp butter or shortening
5 tbsp flour
1/4 tsp sage (optional)
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 beef bouillon cube
1 chicken bouillon cube
2 cups water
Instructions:
Prepare the Bouillon:
Start by bringing 2 cups of water to a boil in a small pot. Add the beef and chicken bouillon cubes and stir until completely dissolved. Once the bouillon is ready, set it aside.
Mix the Dry Ingredients:
In a small bowl, combine the flour, sage (if you're using it), garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly and set aside for later.
Make the Roux:
In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter or shortening. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Once the butter has melted, gradually add the flour mixture, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or whisk. Continue cooking the roux, stirring the entire time, until it turns a golden-brown color. This gives the gravy that rich, signature flavor.
Combine the Bouillon and Roux:
Slowly pour the bouillon mixture into the roux, whisking as you go to prevent any lumps. Continue stirring while you add the liquid to ensure a smooth consistency.
Thicken the Gravy:
Turn up the heat to medium and keep cooking, stirring continuously, until the gravy thickens to your desired creamy consistency. This should take around 5-7 minutes. If it thickens too much, just add a little more water and stir until you reach the perfect texture.
Serve:
Once the gravy has reached a smooth, pourable consistency, remove from heat and serve hot. Perfect with mashed potatoes, fried chicken, or anything else that needs that classic KFC-style gravy touch!
Enjoy!
