Baked French Onion Meatballs
Ingredients:
For the meatballs:
1 lb ground beef
½ cup breadcrumbs
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 egg
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
For the French onion sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
1 cup beef broth
½ teaspoon dried thyme
1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix until just combined.
Form into 1-inch meatballs and place on a lined baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, then set aside.
In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until caramelized.
Stir in balsamic vinegar, beef broth, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes.
Transfer meatballs to a baking dish and pour the onion sauce over them. Top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
Bake for another 10-12 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve hot.
