π§ Maple French Toast Sausage Bake
π Ingredients
For the casserole:
1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)
1 loaf brioche or challah bread (about 10 cups), cubed
8 large eggs
2 Β½ cups whole milk
Β½ cup heavy cream
Β½ cup pure maple syrup (plus more for serving)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
ΒΌ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pinch of salt
Optional topping:
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, for crunch)
πͺ Instructions
1. Cook the sausage:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook sausage until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease and set aside.
2. Assemble the casserole:
Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Spread cubed bread evenly in the dish. Sprinkle cooked sausage on top.
3. Mix the custard:
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
4. Pour & soak:
Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and sausage.
Press down gently to ensure the bread soaks it up.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
5. Bake:
Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C).
Optional: mix melted butter and brown sugar, then drizzle over the top.
Bake uncovered for 45β55 minutes, or until golden and set in the center.
Let cool slightly before slicing.
