Old-School Spaghetti
Ingredients:
- 12 oz spaghetti
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish
Directions:
1. **Cook the spaghetti:** Boil water in a large pot, add salt, and cook spaghetti according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
2. **Prepare the sauce:** In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.
3. **Brown the meat:** Add ground beef or turkey to the skillet and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
4. **Simmer the sauce:** Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Add sugar (if using), oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Reduce heat and let simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
5. **Combine and serve:** Toss the cooked spaghetti with the sauce or serve the sauce over the pasta. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan and fresh basil or parsley.
6. **Enjoy!** Serve warm with garlic bread or a side salad.
