Classic Diner-Style Patty Melt with Secret Sauce
Ingredients:
For the Patty Melt:
1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar cheese
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
8 slices rye bread (or sourdough for a twist)
For the Secret Sauce:
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon pickle relish
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
Directions:
Prepare the Secret Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pickle relish, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
Stir well and set aside in the fridge for flavors to meld.
Caramelize the Onions:
In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter.
Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and soft.
Remove from heat and set aside.
Cook the Beef Patties:
Season ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties, slightly larger than the bread slices (they will shrink when cooked).
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
Remove patties and set aside.
Assemble the Patty Melt:
Spread secret sauce on one side of each slice of bread.
Place a slice of cheddar cheese on 4 of the bread slices.
Top each with a beef patty, caramelized onions, a slice of Swiss cheese, and the remaining bread slices.
Grill the Patty Melts:
In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat.
Place assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is crispy and golden brown, and the cheese is melted.
Serve & Enjoy:
Cut in half and serve hot with extra secret sauce for dipping!
