Gardening Tip…..Companion Planting. Planting Cucumbers 🥒 and Sunflowers 🌻 together.
If you want your cucumbers to be sweeter, plant them alongside sunflowers in your garden area. As the cucumbers thrive and grow, the cucumber tendrils will use the sunflower stalks for their climbing support, and you'll have some of the sweetest cucumbers you've ever eaten. This is known as companion planting.
You need to take into consideration that Sunflower seeds germinate at a lower temperature than cucumber seeds do. A simple guide to go by is to plant the cucumber seeds when the sunflowers are about 12 inches tall. Cucumbers like to twine around anything they can.
There are some things that you need to keep away from your cucumbers like sage and rosemary. They can inhibit the growth of your cucumbers, and you don’t want that. They contain oils that can slow down the growth of cucumber plants. Plants like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower will try to compete with the cucumbers for the same nutrients that are in the soil, so plant them separately also. Marigolds and cucumbers are another excellent companion plant pairing for your garden. This is because marigolds are some of the best plants to grow if you want to naturally repel some of the garden pests because they don’t like the scent of the marigolds. Such as thrips, white flies, and squash bugs.
Sunflowers 🌻 provides benefits to nearby vegetables by attracting the good insects that you want to see in your garden such as bees and ladybugs, which can help with your pollination needs and also helping to control pest.
Sunflowers also give off some phenolic compounds that are toxic to some plants. These compounds impedes the growth of some plants around them, or will even kill some plants do make sure you know what you are doing when and where you are planting your sunflowers.
Root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, radishes and onions are also good choices for cucumber companion planting as they do not invade each other's territory. They primarily grow beneath the soil, and cucumbers will send down one larger root and also a few shallow roots.
Cucumbers and squash also pairs well with peppers because their low growth helps shield the soil from the direct sunlight. They help prevents weeds, and keeps your soil from drying out too quickly.
If you grow cucumbers as without trellising, add some organic mulch around your plants. Make a small hill or mound before planting the cucumber. Build the hill, or mound, about 10-12 inchesin diameter and about 3-4 inches high, this helps to drain the water from around the stem. Cucumbers will do much better if they have the ability to climb instead of just laying on the ground. The vines will grab anything near it such as string, fence, wire trellis, or cages.
Use your old coffee grounds as a fertilizer when growing vegetables such as beans, potatoes, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, and radishes. Root crops need the magnesium and the potassium. Green crops wants the nitrogen. There are some things that you shouldn’t place in your garden area, such as Oleander and Foxglove. All parts of these plants are toxic and harmful to you and your health and should never under any circumstances be grown near, in or around your vegetables. Gladiolus should be kept out of the garden especially if you're growing legumes like any kind of peas and beans. Plant your sunflower seeds after the danger of a spring frost has passed and the soil temperature is at least 60 degrees. This will be between the months March and May, depending on where you live.
Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale will not grow well near sunflowers if not placed correctly because they may get too much shade from the sunflowers.
Pole beans are not a good companion for sunflowers, because they will become tangled up with the sunflower stalks.
