Homemade Chapati (Roti) ✨
Soft, warm, and versatile, chapati is an easy-to-make Indian flatbread perfect for scooping up curries, dals, or for wrapping around fillings. With just a few ingredients, you’ll have a delightful accompaniment for any meal!
Ingredients
🌾 Whole Wheat Flour (Atta): 200g (plus extra for rolling)
💧 Water: 120ml (approx.)
🧂 Salt: 1 pinch
🫒 Oil: 1 tsp (optional, for softer chapatis)
Method
🥣 Make the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Gradually add water, mixing with your hand or a wooden spoon, until the mixture forms a soft dough. If using, add the oil.
Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20–30 minutes.
🔪 Divide and Shape:
Divide the dough into 6–8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten slightly. Dust your work surface with flour and roll each ball into a thin circle about 15cm in diameter.
🔥 Cook the Chapati:
Heat a dry frying pan or tawa over medium-high heat. Place a rolled chapati on the hot pan and cook for about 30 seconds, or until bubbles form.
Flip and cook the other side for 30 seconds. Flip once more and press lightly with a spatula or cloth to encourage puffing.
🌡️ Keep Warm:
Remove the cooked chapati and place it in a clean kitchen towel to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
