Picking Peas ❤️
When I was a kid and all through my years at home, this is what we all had to do all summer long or when things were ready to harvest. Peas were always planted at the beginning of the season and in the middle again. We would get in the garden early in the morning before the heat of the day and start picking peas (every kind you could think of), green and colored butterbeans, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, okra, corn, peppers, sugar cane, squash, zucchini, watermelons, cotton and whatever else was growing at the time of harvesting. Then we would spend the rest of our day sitting in swings in the back yard shelling, silking, shucking or cutting up vegetables and helping to prepare them for canning or freezing. I know that as kids, we all despised doing this. As I got older, I learned what a blessing it was just to be able to have access to all those good fresh fruits and vegetables because they are so good and so good for you too. Fresh peas and fresh creamed corn straight from the field to the table with some fried cornbread, buttermilk biscuits, a piece of fat back, streak-o-lean or country ham, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and onions and some good homemade fried chicken where the chicken was so fresh that he was just plucked out of the yard that day and a big ole glass of sweet tea where the pitcher seemed like there was no bottom to it because it was always full. Then there would always be some sort of homemade pie, cake or fried fruit pies. We didn’t know what eating fast food was when I was a kid, it wasn’t an option in our house. I thank my grandparents for instilling such values in me. We didn’t have air conditioning either to go in and cool off. If we got hot, we got us a dipper of water from the well. We all drank from the same dipper that hung on a nail on the post by the well. I don’t recall getting sick a lot as a child either. We had dirt yards and we went bare foot in the yard and fields also. Our shoes was saved for wearing to town or to church. To this day, I still look forward to reaping the rewards of fresh vegetables and I can say I am proud of the way I was raised, not everyone had acess to such good fresh food and weren’t taught how to plant and harvest your own food and to prepare for rainy days. ❤️❤️
Note: I am so looking forward to reaping the rewards of fresh vegetables again this year. The Lord provides, but we have to sow the seeds.
