Fluffy, golden, and full of signature holes, these traditional British crumpets are perfect for slathering with butter, honey, or jam. They're a delightful treat for breakfast or teatime!
Ingredients:
π Strong White Bread Flour: 250g
π₯ Caster Sugar: 1 tsp
β Instant Yeast: 7g sachet
π§ Salt: Β½ tsp
π§ Warm Water: 200ml
π₯ Warm Milk: 200ml
π§ Butter: For greasing
π³ Rings or Crumpet Rings: For shaping
Method:
1. π₯£ Make the Batter:
In a large bowl, mix the flour, caster sugar, and yeast. Gradually add the warm water and milk, whisking until you have a smooth, thick batter.
Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave in a warm place for 1 hour, or until the batter is bubbly and risen.
2. π§ Add the Salt:
After the batter has risen, stir in the salt gently without deflating the bubbles too much.
3. π³ Prepare the Rings:
Lightly grease the crumpet rings and heat a large non-stick frying pan over low-medium heat. Grease the pan lightly with butter.
4. π₯ Cook the Crumpets:
Place the rings in the pan and spoon in enough batter to fill each ring about halfway. Cook for 5β7 minutes until the top is set and covered in holes.
Carefully remove the rings, flip the crumpets, and cook for another 1β2 minutes until lightly golden on the other side.
5. π Serve:
Serve warm, topped with butter, honey, jam, or your favourite spread.
