Rain Cloud in a Jar βοΈπ§οΈ
(A magical science + art experiment for kids & curious minds!)
This Rain Cloud in a Jar is a fun, hands-on experiment that visually demonstrates how rain falls from clouds.
π Ingredients:
- 1 large clear glass jar or cup (for best visibility)
- Water (to fill the jar about 3/4 full)
- Shaving cream (foam type, not gel)
- Liquid food coloring (blue is most popular, but rainbow colors are amazing!)
- Small cups or droppers for mixing dye
- Optional: Pipettes, eye droppers, or plastic spoons
---
π¨βπ³ Directions:
Step 1: Prepare the rain clouds
1. Fill the jar about 3/4 of the way with water. This is your atmosphere.
2. Spray a generous amount of shaving cream on top β this will be your fluffy "cloud." Let it settle a few seconds.
Step 2: Mix your rain
1. In small cups, mix several drops of food coloring with a little water. You can make multiple colors to simulate different weather moods or create a rainbow rain cloud!
Step 3: Make it rain!
1. Use a dropper, spoon, or pipette to drop the colored water gently onto the top of the shaving cream cloud.
2. Watch closely as the βrainβ begins to fall through the cloud and swirl down into the water, just like rain falling from real clouds!

π‘Tips:
- Use warm water to help the food coloring disperse more vividly.
- Try using multiple colors for a stormy or rainbow effect.
- Turn it into a science lesson: explain how clouds hold moisture, and when theyβre full, it rains!
- Try timing how long it takes different colors to fall β great for observational learning.
- Take photos or slow-mo videos β itβs incredibly photogenic and satisfying!
