Traditional Scottish Potato Scones 🥔✨
Soft, fluffy, and slightly crisp on the outside, these traditional Scottish potato scones (or tattie scones) are a breakfast staple. Serve them warm with butter, eggs, or a hearty fry-up for a comforting and delicious start to the day.
Ingredients
🥔 For the Potato Scones:
🥔 Potatoes: 450g (about 2 large), peeled and chopped
🧈 Butter: 50g, softened
🌾 Plain flour: 100g (plus extra for dusting)
🧂 Salt: 1/2 tsp
🌶️ Black pepper: A pinch (optional)
🛢️ For Cooking:
🛢 Vegetable oil or butter: For frying
Method
🥔 Cook the Potatoes
🌡️ Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a saucepan of cold salted water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender.
🧈 Drain the potatoes well and return them to the pan. Add the butter and mash until smooth and lump-free. Allow to cool slightly.
🌾 Make the Dough
🥣 In a bowl, mix the mashed potatoes with the flour, salt, and black pepper (if using). Stir until the mixture forms a soft dough.
🧄 Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Be careful not to overwork it!
🔪 Shape the Scones
🥄 Roll out the dough to about 1/2 cm thick. Cut into circles or triangles (a dinner plate makes a great template for circles).
🍳 Cook the Scones
🔥 Heat a frying pan or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease with butter or oil.
🥔 Cook the potato scones for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and slightly crisp.
🧈 Serve Warm
