Ingredients
For the Cake
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 2 tbsp green food coloring
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
Instructions
Prepare the Cake Batter:**
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until smooth and creamy.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top. Repeat with the second and third layers. Frost the top and sides of the cake.
