Also there seems to be a debate as to this being the original recipe. The recipe came from the Walton Family Cookbook, and I typed it just as it appears. The recipe is Earl Hamner Jr.'s Family recipe. He's the man that wrote the novel on which the Walton's is based. I posted a pic of the recipe from the cookbook in the comments.
I should note that I cut the spices in half for my cake as its a bit spicy for my liking, but that is the amount of spice called for in the original recipe. :) The pic is actually from several years ago when I baked the cake for a client. I frosted it with Apple butter frosting, that recipe is also in the comments. the cookbook has a recipe for whiskey frosting, also in the comments. :)
OLIVIA Walton’s APPLESAUCE CAKE #sundaydinnerdessert
(serves 12)
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 cups unsweetened applesauce
2 cups light raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 tsp baking soda
3-1/2 cups flour (sifted)
2 eggs
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp cloves
2 tsp nutmeg
pinch of salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Sift together: Flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Take 1/2 cup of flour mixture and stir into the nuts and raisins. Set both aside.
Cream butter until whipped soft. Add sugar a little at a time until mixture is smooth. Beat in eggs vigorously. Alternately stir in flour mixture and applesauce. When all mixed together, add nuts and raisins and mix well.
Pour batter into a well-greased 9"X13" cake pan . Bake for one hour. Cool ten minutes. Frost if desired or dust with powdered sugar.
