This classic British dessert is a great way to turn stale bread into a warm, custardy treat. Rich, comforting, and delicious, bread and butter pudding is perfect for a cosy evening dessert.
Ingredients ๐
๐ 8 slices of day-old bread (brioche or white bread works best)
๐ง 50g unsalted butter, softened
๐ฅ 3 large eggs
๐ฅ 500ml whole milk
๐ฅ 100ml double cream
๐ฏ 75g caster sugar
๐ฟ 1 tsp vanilla extract
๐ถ๏ธ 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
๐ 50g raisins or sultanas (optional)
๐ฏ 1-2 tbsp demerara sugar (for sprinkling)
Method ๐ฉโ๐ณ
๐ฅฃ Prepare the bread: Butter each slice of bread on one side. Cut the slices into triangles and layer them in a greased baking dish, overlapping slightly. Sprinkle raisins or sultanas between the layers if using.
๐ฅ Make the custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, caster sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon (if using).
๐ฎ Soak the bread: Pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring every piece is soaked. Press down lightly with the back of a spoon to help the bread absorb the custard. Let it sit for 15 minutes.
๐ฅ Preheat the oven: Heat your oven to 180ยฐC (160ยฐC fan)/Gas Mark 4.
๐ Sprinkle and bake: Sprinkle the top with demerara sugar for a caramelised crust. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set.
โจ Serve and enjoy: Let the pudding cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with cream, custard, or a scoop of ice cream.
