Crispy Rye Patty Melt with Tangy Secret Sauce
Recipe
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
8 slices rye bread
8 slices Swiss cheese
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Directions:
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the sliced onions. Cook slowly, stirring often, for about 15–20 minutes or until they’re golden and caramelized. Set aside.
In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into 4 flat, wide patties sized slightly smaller than your bread slices.
In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes on each side, or until cooked through and nicely seared. Set aside.
In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, sweet pickle relish, garlic powder, and onion powder to make the secret sauce. Taste and adjust if needed.
Lay out 4 slices of rye bread. Spread secret sauce on each slice, then layer with one slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, a portion of caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and finally another slice of bread on top.
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter.
Cook each sandwich for 3–4 minutes on each side, pressing slightly, until the bread is golden and crisp and the cheese is melted.
Slice in half and serve immediately with extra sauce on the side if desired.
