For the Cake:
β’ 2 cups (400 g) granulated white sugar
β’ 1ΒΎ cups (245 g) all-purpose flour
β’ ΒΎ cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-processed)
β’ 1Β½ tsp baking powder
β’ 1Β½ tsp baking soda
β’ Β½ tsp salt
β’ 2 large eggs
β’ 1 cup (240 ml) warm water or coffee
β’ 1 cup (240 ml) milk
β’ Β½ cup (120 ml) vegetable, corn, safflower, or canola oil
β’ 1Β½ tsp pure vanilla extract

β’ 6 oz (180 g) semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
β’ 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
β’ 2 cups (230 g) confectioners' (powdered) sugar, sifted
β’ 1Β½ tsp pure vanilla extract

1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (180Β°C). Grease and line two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
4. Gradually add the warm water or coffee and mix until combined. The batter will be thin β thatβs perfect!
5. Divide evenly between the pans and bake for 30β35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
6. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
