Hearty Potato and Minced Beef Pie 🥧🥔
This classic British pie is packed with layers of tender potatoes, seasoned minced beef, and a rich, savoury gravy, all wrapped in a golden, flaky pastry. Perfect for a comforting family dinner!
Ingredients:
🥔 For the Filling:
500g potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
300g minced beef
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp tomato purée
200ml beef stock
Salt & black pepper, to taste
🥧 For the Pastry:
300g ready-made shortcrust pastry
1 egg, beaten (for glazing)
Method:
1️⃣ Prepare the Filling:
🍳 In a pan, cook the minced beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
🧅 Add chopped onion and garlic, cooking until soft.
🍅 Stir in tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
🥄 Pour in the beef stock, simmering for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
2️⃣ Assemble the Pie:
🥧 Preheat oven to 180°C (fan).
🏺 Roll out half of the pastry and line a greased pie dish.
🥔 Layer half of the sliced potatoes on the base, followed by the minced beef mixture, then the remaining potatoes.
🔄 Roll out the remaining pastry and place it on top. Crimp the edges to seal and cut a few small slits for steam to escape.
🥚 Brush with beaten egg for a golden finish.
3️⃣ Bake & Serve:
🔥 Bake for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is golden and crisp.
🍽 Let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with a side of peas and gravy!
