Amish Applesauce Cake
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup water
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup raisins
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, shortening, applesauce, water, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until the batter is smooth and evenly blended.
3. Fold in the chopped nuts and raisins, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly.
5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
6. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool completely in the pan before serving.
Notes:
For added flavor, you can top the cake with caramel glaze or cream cheese frosting (optional).
Store the cake at room temperature for 2–3 days or refrigerate it for up to a week.
