Candied Yams (Candied Sweet Potatoes)
Ingredients:
- 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Arrange the sliced sweet potatoes in a single layer in a baking dish.
3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
4. Stir in brown sugar, orange juice, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until the sugar dissolves and the mixture simmers.
5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
6. Pour the syrup evenly over the sweet potatoes in the baking dish.
7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, basting the sweet potatoes with the syrup occasionally, until tender and caramelized.
9. Let cool slightly before serving.
