Cake Ingredients

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

2 ½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

2 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs, room temp

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk for a richer flavor)

Frosting (Traditional Chocolate)

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

4 cups powdered sugar

¼ cup milk (add more if needed)

1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Make the Cake

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.

In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3–4 min).

Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.

Add dry mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix just until smooth.

Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.

Bake 30–35 minutes, or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.

Make the Frosting

Beat butter until creamy.

Mix in cocoa powder.

Add powdered sugar alternately with milk until smooth and spreadable.

Stir in vanilla.

Assemble

Spread frosting over cooled cake.

Serve right from the pan (classic sheet cake style!).
