Montgomery Pie is a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dessert with two distinct layers. It features a molasses-based bottom layer, and a buttermilk cake top layer. It's a familiar treat in the southeastern Pennsylvania region, often found at family gatherings and church dinners. 🥧

1 8" unbaked pie shell
Bottom Layer
½ cup white sugar
2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
½ cup molasses
1 egg
1 cup water
3 Tablespoons lemon juice
1 Tablespoon lemon zest
Top Layer:
â…” cup white sugar
¼ cup butter, room temperature
1 egg, beaten
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ cup buttermilk
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F
bottom layer - Combine sugar with flour. Stir in molasses, egg, water, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Mix thoroughly and pour into unbaked pie shell.
top layer - Cream butter with remaining sugar until light and fluffy. Add beaten egg. Sift flour and baking soda together, then add to creamed mixture with buttermilk. Spread over the top of mixture in pie shell.
Bake until filling is set, 35 to 40 minutes.
