Traditional Cornish Pasty π₯πΏ
The Cornish pasty is a beloved British classic, originating from Cornwall. With a flaky, golden pastry encasing a hearty filling of beef, potato, swede, and onion, itβs the perfect portable meal for any occasion.
Ingredients
For the Pastry:
πΎ Plain Flour: 500g
π§ Unsalted Butter: 125g, chilled and cubed
π§ Vegetable Shortening: 125g, chilled and cubed
π§ Cold Water: 175ml
π§ Salt: 1 tsp
For the Filling:
π₯© Beef Skirt or Chuck Steak: 450g, diced into small cubes
π₯ Potatoes: 300g, peeled and diced
πΌ Swede (Turnip): 150g, peeled and diced

Onion: 1 large, finely chopped
π§ Salt: 1 tsp
π« Black Pepper: Freshly ground, to taste
π§ Butter: 30g, cut into small pieces
For Assembly:
π₯ Egg: 1, beaten (for glazing)
Method
For the Pastry:
π₯£ Make the Pastry:
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Rub in the butter and shortening with your fingers until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Gradually add the cold water, mixing with a knife, until it comes together into a dough. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
For the Filling:
π₯ Prepare the Filling:
Mix the diced beef, potato, swede, and onion in a bowl. Season generously with salt and pepper.
For Assembly:
πͺ Roll Out the Pastry:
Divide the pastry into 4 equal portions. Roll each piece into a circle about 20cm in diameter.
π₯© Fill the Pasties:
Place a quarter of the filling onto one side of each pastry circle, leaving a border around the edge. Dot with a few pieces of butter.
π₯ Seal the Edges:
Brush the edges with beaten egg, fold the pastry over the filling, and crimp the edges to seal tightly. Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
π§ Glaze and Bake:
Brush the tops of the pasties with the remaining beaten egg. Bake in a preheated oven at 180Β°C (fan) or 200Β°C (gas mark 6) for 50β55 minutes, until golden brown.
