Classic Patty Melt Recipe
The Patty Melt is a comforting, indulgent sandwich that combines juicy beef patties, gooey melted cheese, and caramelized onions, all layered between crispy, buttery toasted bread. It's a diner classic that blends the best of a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich into one mouthwatering bite.

Ingredients
For the Patty:

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend preferred)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
For the Onions:

2 medium onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp sugar (optional, for sweetness)
For Assembly:

8 slices of rye bread (or sourdough)
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar cheese
4 tbsp butter (for toasting the bread)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Caramelized Onions
Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and soft. Add sugar for extra sweetness if desired. Set aside.
Step 2: Cook the Beef Patties
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties that match the size of your bread.
Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
Cook the patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Remove and set aside.
Step 3: Assemble the Patty Melt
Butter one side of each slice of bread.
On the unbuttered side, layer a slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, a slice of cheddar cheese, and another slice of bread (buttered side facing out).
Repeat for all sandwiches.
Step 4: Grill the Sandwiches
Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat.
Grill each sandwich for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted.
Tips:
Serve with fries, pickles, or a side of coleslaw for a complete meal.
Swap Swiss or cheddar for your favorite cheese to customize the flavor.
Use sourdough or Texas toast for a thicker, crunchier version.
