Ingredients (Serves 6):

4 cups (about 4 medium) apples, peeled, cored, and sliced ยผ-inch thick (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
ยฝ cup (100g) granulated sugar
ยฝ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
ยพ cup (95g) all-purpose flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
ยฝ cup (120ml) water

Instructions:

Prep & Preheat:
Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish or 9-inch pie dish.
Make the Topping:
In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer or fork to cream together softened butter and sugar until smooth. Gradually mix in flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbsโ€”some small clumps are fine.
Layer the Apples:
Spread apple slices evenly in the prepared dish. Sprinkle cinnamon over the top, then pour water evenly over the apples (this creates steam for tender fruit).
Add the Crumb:
Sprinkle the butter-sugar-flour mixture evenly over the applesโ€”no need to press down.
Bake:
Bake 30โ€“40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling and fork-tender. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent with foil after 25 minutes.
