1 box German chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients per package instructions)
1 cup sweetened condensed milk
1 cup caramel sauce
½ cup chocolate chips
½ cup shredded coconut
½ cup chopped pecans
½ cup chocolate frosting
½ cup caramel frosting
Instructions:
Prepare Cake:
Prepare the German chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions.
Bake the cake in a 9x13 inch pan (or as directed on the box).
Poke Holes:
Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes.
Using the handle of a wooden spoon or a fork, poke holes all over the cake.
Pour Sweetened Condensed Milk:
Slowly pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, allowing it to soak into the holes.
Pour Caramel Sauce:
Pour the caramel sauce evenly over the cake.
Add Toppings:
Sprinkle the chocolate chips, shredded coconut, and chopped pecans over the cake.
Cool:
Allow the cake to cool completely, at least 1 hour, to allow the sweetened condensed milk and caramel to fully soak in.
Frost:
Frost the cake with chocolate frosting and caramel frosting. You can create swirls or patterns with the frostings.
Serve:
Slice and serve.
Tips and Variations:
Cake Mix: Follow the package directions precisely for the best cake texture.
Poking Holes: Make sure the holes are evenly distributed and deep enough to allow the liquids to soak in.
Sweetened Condensed Milk and Caramel: Pour these slowly and evenly for even distribution.
Toppings:
Use toasted coconut or pecans for enhanced flavor.
Add other toppings like maraschino cherries or sprinkles.
Use different types of chocolate chips (milk, dark, etc.)
Frosting:
Use homemade frosting for a richer flavor.
Create a marbled effect by swirling the chocolate and caramel frostings.
Use whipped cream instead of frosting.
Liquor addition: A tablespoon or two of a complimentary liquor, like a coffee liqueur, or a chocolate liqueur, can be added to the sweetened condensed milk, or caramel sauce.
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Cooling: Ensure the cake is fully cooled before frosting, to prevent the frosting from melting.
Enjoy your delicious German Chocolate Poke Cake!
