French Onion Sausage Roll

Ingredients:

1 lb (450g) sausage meat
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed if frozen
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Fresh thyme leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sausage meat, caramelized onions, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle, about 10x12 inches.
Spoon the sausage mixture onto the puff pastry sheet, spreading it out evenly, leaving a border around the edges.
Starting from one long edge, roll up the puff pastry tightly to encase the sausage mixture. Pinch the seam to seal.
Place the sausage roll seam side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top and sides of the roll with the beaten egg.
Using a sharp knife, make shallow diagonal cuts across the top of the roll, about 1 inch apart, to allow steam to escape while baking.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through, and the sausage is cooked.
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves if desired.
Slice and serve the French Onion Sausage Roll warm as a delicious appetizer or main dish.
