sausage rolls
Ingredients:
1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
1 pound (450g) of sausage meat (or sausages with the casing removed)
1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
1 tablespoon of milk (optional, for egg wash)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon of dried herbs (optional, such as thyme or rosemary)
1 small onion (finely chopped, optional)
1 clove of garlic (minced, optional)
Instructions:
1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. Prepare the Filling:
If using sausages, remove the casing and place the sausage meat in a bowl.
Mix in salt, pepper, and any optional ingredients like dried herbs, chopped onion, or minced garlic.
3. Assemble the Rolls:
Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface.
Cut the pastry into rectangles (about 4x6 inches) or however large you'd like your sausage rolls.
Place a portion of sausage meat along one edge of each pastry rectangle, shaping it into a log.
Roll the pastry over the sausage meat to form a log shape, sealing the edge with a bit of water.
4. Prepare for Baking:
Place the sausage rolls seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the tops of the rolls with a mixture of the beaten egg and milk (if using) for a golden finish.
5. Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage is cooked through.
6. Cool and Serve:
Let the sausage rolls cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
Feel free to customize the filling with your favorite spices or add a bit of cheese for extra flavor!
