Homemade Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
Ingredients:
For the Doughnuts:
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110°F / 45°C)
3/4 cup warm milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Oil, for frying
For the Glaze:
2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, salt, egg, and melted butter. Stir in the yeast mixture.
Gradually add flour, mixing until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Doughnuts:
Roll the dough out to 1/2-inch thickness.
Use a doughnut cutter or two round cutters to cut out the doughnuts.
Place the doughnuts on a floured tray and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Fry the Doughnuts:
Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pan to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the doughnuts for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
Transfer the doughnuts to paper towels to drain excess oil.
Prepare the Glaze:
In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Glaze the Doughnuts:
While the doughnuts are still warm, dip them into the glaze.
Place the glazed doughnuts on a wire rack to set and allow the glaze to harden.
