½ cup milk (room temp)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the fudge layer:

½ cup packed brown sugar

¼ cup granulated sugar

¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 ¼ cups hot water

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter or spray a 9-inch square baking dish.

Make the cake batter:
In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Stir until just combined.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared dish.

Make the fudge topping:
In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cake batter—do not stir.

Pour hot water:
Carefully pour the hot water over the top (yes, just pour it right on there). Do not mix. It’ll look weird—trust the process.

Bake:
Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top looks set and slightly cracked. The cake will rise to the top, and a thick fudgy sauce will form underneath.

Cool slightly:
Let it sit for about 10 minutes to thicken up a bit more.
