Fried Calzone recipe!
Ingredients (Makes 4-6 calzones):
For the Dough
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) instant yeast
¾ cup warm water
1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Filling
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
½ cup ricotta cheese
½ cup marinara sauce (plus extra for serving)
½ cup cooked Italian sausage or pepperoni (optional)
½ teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
For Frying
2 cups vegetable oil
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
Add flour, salt, and olive oil, then knead into a smooth dough (about 8-10 minutes).
Cover and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
In a bowl, mix mozzarella, ricotta, marinara sauce, and seasonings.
If using meat, add cooked Italian sausage or pepperoni.
Step 3: Assemble the Calzones
Divide dough into 4-6 pieces and roll each into a 6-inch circle.
Place 2-3 tablespoons of filling on one half of the dough, leaving a ½-inch border.
Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
Step 4: Fry the Calzones
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
Fry each calzone for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Step 5: Serve
Serve hot with extra marinara sauce for dipping!
Tips
✔ You can use different fillings like spinach & feta, mushrooms, or ham & cheese.
