2 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups light corn syrup
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 packet unsweetened Kool-Aid (any flavor)
Gel food coloring (to match flavor, optional)
Powdered sugar for dusting
Nonstick spray or butter for hands
Directions:
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
In a large heavy saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
Bring to a boil without stirring and cook until the mixture reaches 250°F (hard ball stage) on a candy thermometer.
Remove from heat and immediately stir in butter, vanilla, Kool-Aid, and optional food coloring.
Carefully pour the hot taffy onto the prepared baking sheet and let cool until just cool enough to handle.
Grease your hands and begin pulling the taffy by stretching and folding it repeatedly for 10–15 minutes until it becomes lighter in color and firm.
