French fries are considered American cuisine. We've been eating fries since 1895. So why are they called "French" Fries?
Well actually, French fries are neither American or French in origin.

The origins of the French fry have been traced back to Belgium, where historians claim sliced potatoes were being fried in the late-1600s. It turns out that American soldiers stationed in Belgium during World War I were introduced to French fries. The Belgian army's official language was French, so the soldiers nicknamed the fried potatoes "French fries". Now ya know!
