Salted Caramel Apple Butter
Ingredients:
- 6 lbs apples (about 12 large apples), peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce
- 1 teaspoon sea salt (for garnish, optional)
Directions:
1. Place the chopped apples in a large slow cooker.
2. Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and salt to the slow cooker. Stir well to combine.
3. Cover and cook on low for 10-12 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and caramelized.
4. Use an immersion blender or transfer the mixture to a blender to puree until smooth.
5. Stir in the vanilla extract and caramel sauce until well combined.
6. Continue to cook uncovered on low for another 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apple butter thickens to your desired consistency.
7. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
8. Transfer to sterilized jars and refrigerate. Garnish with sea salt before serving if desired.
