Fried pies are a fun holiday dessert in place of a traditional pie as you can make several different flavors easily, and require no forks :)

The fried pie is a fruit-filled pocket pie popular among Amish.
Recipe from Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book of Fine Old Recipes 1961

Fried Pies
2 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup cold water
homemade or prepared pie filling
Sift the flour and salt together. Cut in the shortening and mix together using hands. Add water. Place on a floured surface, and roll out about to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Cut out circles of about 4 inches in diameter using a large cookie cutter or the bottom of a cereal bowl. In each circle, place 1 1/2 Tablespoons of sweetened mashed fruit Moisten the edges of dough with cold water and fold to make semi-circle. Press the edges together with a fork. Fry in deep hot oil until pie crust is golden brown. Drain on a paper towel. if desired, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with vanilla glaze.

**some choices for filling other than fruit include thick apple sauce or apple butter , a Nutella type spread, peanut butter & jelly.
