Chicken Makhani (Indian Butter Chicken) ππ
A rich and creamy classic, Chicken Makhani, or Butter Chicken, is a comforting dish made with tender chicken simmered in a spiced tomato and butter sauce. Perfect with basmati rice or naan, itβs a beloved dish that brings the taste of India to your table.
Ingredients:
500 g boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons garam masala
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
3 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon ginger, minced
1 can (400 g) tomato puree
1 teaspoon ground fenugreek (optional)
1/2 cup heavy cream
Fresh cilantro (for garnish)
Instructions:
Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, mix the yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, cumin, coriander, turmeric, and chili powder. Add the chicken pieces and toss to coat. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours in the refrigerator. π§
Cook the Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large pan over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook for 5-6 minutes until browned on all sides but not fully cooked through. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside. π
Make the Sauce: In the same pan, add 2 tablespoons of butter and sautΓ© the chopped onion for 3-4 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for another minute. Pour in the tomato puree and fenugreek (if using). Simmer for 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. π
Add the Chicken: Return the browned chicken to the pan, cover, and simmer for another 15-20 minutes until the chicken is fully cooked and tender. Stir in the heavy cream and let it cook for an additional 5 minutes to make the sauce rich and creamy. π‘οΈ
Serve: Serve the butter chicken over a bed of basmati rice, garnished with fresh cilantro. Enjoy with naan on the side for the perfect meal! π½οΈ
