Karo is a popular brand of corn syrup. In vintage recipes you may often see corn syrup as an ingredient in baked goods. Of course, today corn syrup has a bit of a bad name, but like any sugar, it should just be used in moderation.
That said, Karo adds moisture to baked goods and simply substituting with a granulated sugar can change the texture of the baked good.

Good substitutes for corn syrup
Honey
Molasses
Pure maple syrup
Agave nectar
Brown rice syrup
All of the above can be substituted in equal amounts for corn syrup

To use brown sugar as a substitute
Combining 1 1/4 cups of packed brown sugar and three to four Tablespoons of water. Use this in place of one cup of corn syrup
