Did you grow up with foods or customs that may have been unfamiliar or different from the foods or customers of the region you lived in?
My mother was English, so tea was a big part of my growing up years. While my friends were enjoying Wonder white bread smothered in peanut butter and jelly with a cold glass of milk or juice, I was nibbling on triangle shaped tea sandwiches consisting of thinly sliced cucumber with cream cheese, red cabbage, or egg salad on crustless homemade bread. Happily washing it down with dainty cups of hot, sweet and milky Red Rose tea. Having an immigrant parent meant growing up with a fusion of foods, customs, and ideas.
As a child, of course, I longed to pull a PBJ sandwich out of my brown paper lunch bag, but as an adult I appreciate the melting pot of my childhood kitchen.
