Malaysian Fish Curry with Okra & Tomatoes πΆοΈβ¨
A hearty and flavorful Malaysian-style curry made with fish fillets, okra, and tomatoes, simmered in a fragrant coconut-based sauce with a blend of spices. Perfect served with steamed rice or roti!
π Ingredients (Serves 4)
π For the Fish Curry:
500g (1 lb) firm white fish fillets (such as snapper, tilapia, or cod) π
Salt and pepper to taste π§
1 tbsp coconut oil or vegetable oil π₯₯
1 medium onion, finely chopped π§
3 garlic cloves, minced π§
1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated πΏ
1 tbsp Malaysian curry powder (or regular curry powder) πΆοΈ
1 tsp ground turmeric π
1 tsp ground cumin πΆοΈ
1 can (400ml) coconut milk π₯₯π₯
1/2 cup fish or vegetable broth π²
1 tbsp tamarind paste (or lime juice as a substitute) π
1 tbsp brown sugar (optional) π¬
2 medium tomatoes, diced π
200g (7 oz) okra, sliced into 1-inch pieces π±
π For Serving:
Steamed jasmine rice or basmati rice π
Warm roti or naan π«
Fresh cilantro for garnish πΏ

π©βπ³ Instructions
πΉ 1. Prepare the Fish:
Cut the fish into 1β2 inch pieces. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
πΉ 2. Make the Curry Base:
Heat coconut oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
Add chopped onion and sautΓ© for 4β5 minutes until soft and golden.
Add garlic and ginger, and cook for another 1β2 minutes until fragrant.
Stir in curry powder, turmeric, and cumin, and cook for 1β2 minutes to bloom the spices.
πΉ 3. Add Coconut Milk & Broth:
Pour in the coconut milk and fish broth. Stir well to combine.
Add tamarind paste (or lime juice), brown sugar (if using), and salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5β7 minutes.
πΉ 4. Add Okra & Tomatoes:
Add the sliced okra and diced tomatoes to the curry sauce. Cook for another 5β7 minutes until the okra is tender and the tomatoes have softened.
πΉ 5. Add Fish:
Gently add the fish pieces to the curry and simmer for 5β8 minutes until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily. Stir gently to avoid breaking up the fish pieces.

Serve the curry hot over steamed rice, or with warm roti on the side.
Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with lime wedges for added brightness πΏπ
