Ingredients:
For the chocolate cake:
1 box (15.25 ounces) chocolate cake mix
Ingredients required by cake mix box (usually eggs, water, vegetable oil)
For the peanut butter filling:
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
For the caramel sauce:
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup heavy cream, warmed
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
For the chocolate ganache drizzle:
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup heavy cream
Preparation Steps:
* Prepare and bake the chocolate cake according to package directions in a 9x13 inch baking pan. Let cool completely.
* While cake cools, prepare the peanut butter filling: In a large bowl, beat creamy peanut butter and softened butter until smooth.
* Gradually add powdered sugar and milk, beating until smooth and creamy.
* Prepare the caramel sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
* Increase heat to medium-high and boil without stirring until the syrup turns a deep amber color. Do not burn.
* Carefully and slowly pour the warmed heavy cream into the hot caramel (it will bubble vigorously). Stir until smooth.
* Remove from heat and stir in butter, vanilla extract, and salt until combined. Let cool completely.
* Once cake is completely cool, carefully slice the cake horizontally into two even layers.
* Spread the peanut butter filling evenly over the bottom cake layer.
* Place the second cake layer on top of the peanut butter filling.
* Pour about half of the cooled caramel sauce over the top of the cake, spreading it evenly.
* Prepare the chocolate ganache drizzle: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips and heavy cream. Microwave on high for 30-60 seconds, or until chocolate is melted. Stir until smooth.
* Drizzle the chocolate ganache over the caramel layer in a decorative pattern.
* If desired, drizzle with additional caramel sauce.
* Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the layers to set before serving.
